Letter from the Chief

July 2006

On behalf of the Board of Fire Commissioners, administrative staff, and over 50 dedicated firefighters, we would like to express our gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community of Mammoth Lakes. We serve with pride, sharing a sense of camaraderie that few fire departments experience.

MLFD continues to buck the trend of diminishing volunteer firefighters. Our firefighters are arguably second to none, and demonstrate the professionalism and ability usually reserved for career fire departments. The Town of Mammoth Lakes provides a substantial challenge to our department with complex incidents, a rapidly growing resort community, and the severity of winters at 8,000+ feet. Fortunately we have the resources to meet the challenge, a decent budget, good equipment, and the best firefighters.

The future promises to bring more challenges. We look forward to these opportunities with anticipation. We will rise to these challenges with the addition of full-time firefighters, a new station, and the purchase of more modern apparatus and equipment. With these resources we will improve our response times, further develop our special teams, and maintain our equipment and hydrants in peak condition.

MLFD will also be diligent in keeping the community safe by being proactive in fire prevention and public education. All businesses will be inspected at least annually and plans for new construction thoroughly reviewed for fire safety. In addition, we will work with the USFS and the homeowners to reduce the threat from wildland fires.

We look forward to working with the community.

Sincerely,

Brent J. Harper,
Fire Chief
